Tajikistan judoka Nurali Emomali caused a commotion at the Paris Olympics in the 66-kilogram event. During the round of 16 match against Israel’s Baruch Shmailov, Emomali refused to shake hands with his opponent after winning. Reports claim he shouted “Allah Akbar” towards Shmailov, adding to the controversy.

In the quarterfinals, Emomali faced Japan’s Hifumi Abe but had to withdraw from the tournament due to a left arm injury sustained while trying to break his fall. This unfortunate incident led to Serbia’s Strahinja Bunčić advancing in the repechage round through a walkover.

Abe eventually went on to defeat Brazil’s Willian Lima in the final, securing his second gold medal in the event. Lima earned a silver medal, marking his first Olympic medal. Additionally, Kazakhstan’s Gusman Kyrgyzbayev and Moldova’s Denis Vieru both claimed bronze medals in the competition.

Notably, Emomali wasn’t the only judoka who declined to shake Shmailov’s hand. Morocco’s Abderrahmane Boushita also refused the gesture after losing to Shamilov. Israel had a strong judo presence at the Paris Olympics, with 12 competitors on the team and four in action on Sunday.

In other developments, Algeria’s Messaoud Dris was disqualified from the competition for failing to make weight ahead of his scheduled match against Tohar Butbul. As a result, Butbul was declared the winner by walkover.

The incident involving Emomali and Shmailov highlights the intense emotions and rivalries that can surface in the competitive world of judo. Sportsmanship plays a crucial role in maintaining respect and dignity among athletes, regardless of the outcome of the matches.

It is essential for all participants to uphold the values of fair play and mutual respect, as these principles are fundamental to the spirit of sportsmanship. While the heat of competition can sometimes lead to intense emotions, it is important for athletes to remember the importance of displaying respect and sportsmanship towards their opponents.
