You’re not done with the taxman yet. If the tax return campaign has ended for all French people since the beginning of June, the tax administration still has work to do and will come back to you this summer or this fall at the latest. As explained by the Ministry of the Economy, “the declaration of income makes it possible to know whether the tax deducted at source corresponds to the amount of tax due”. Depending on the amount declared, you will be able to benefit from a refund… Or be debited from your bank account if you still have to pay a balance on the tax.
How to know your situation? On its website, the Ministry of the Economy specifies that you may be eligible for a refund “if the amount deducted as part of the withholding tax in 2022 is greater than the final amount of your tax or if you are entitled to a refund reductions or tax credits”. You do not have to take any action, because the sum will be paid directly into your bank account or will be sent to you by check if you have not provided your details with the tax authorities.
On the contrary, you owe money to the tax authorities if “the amounts of withholding tax you paid in 2022 are insufficient because you have not updated your withholding tax rate or if you have benefited from an advance reduction or excessive tax credits in January 2023”. Here again, you do not have to take any action, because the amount of tax to be paid will be deducted from the bank account that you have communicated to the tax authorities.
On this subject, Bercy has a request for you: “To guarantee the rapid and secure progress of these operations, make sure before July 3 at the latest, that the bank account known to the tax authorities is the correct one”. Have you already circled July 3 in your diary? Others are to be marked with a red cross so as not to have any unpleasant surprises. Check them out in the slideshow below.
