A pensioner apparently won millions in a game of chance. However, the casino refuses to pay out the winnings.
A 72-year-old pensioner from the US, Roney Beal, claims to have hit the $2.5 million jackpot on a slot machine at Bally’s Casino in Atlantic City. As the Daily Mail reports, the casino refuses to pay out, citing a technical error in the machine.
According to Beal, after her game in February, the slot machine announced that she had won. Virtual coins even came out of the machine and “Jackpot” flashed on the screen. “I was hoping for $1,000 and I said, ‘Please God let me win,'” she told 6ABC Action News on Friday.
The pensioner went on to say that she had put hundreds of dollars into the machine in question before learning that her gamble had not paid off. A casino employee claimed that the winnings were invalid due to an internal error and instead only offered her $350, Daily Mail reports.
According to the Daily Mail, the 72-year-old is now considering taking the casino to court and demanding the payment of her winnings and another million dollars – for the stress caused. Beal argues she is traumatized by the incident and has “no hope” of ever going to a casino again. The 72-year-old further tells the Daily Mail that she suffered a heart attack a year ago and is “hoping and praying” that she gets her prize money before she dies.
Several witnesses reportedly saw the casino employee press a sequence of buttons on the machine after Beal’s supposed win before offering her $350. This led to the belief that the slot machine had been tampered with. Beal and her attorney also claim that she was wrongfully asked to leave the casino.
A similar situation occurred back in 2000. At that time, lawyer Jacques Bezou sued Harrah’s Casino in New Orleans and slot machine manufacturer International Game Technology (IGT) after his client Garrett Grigg denied a slot machine error. This resulted in a payout of $1.35 million.
Bally’s Casino, which has been located on the Atlantic City boardwalk for almost 50 years, denies any responsibility and points to IGT, the manufacturer of the slot machine. In a statement, Bally’s said: “Bally’s is not commenting on this incident as we are only the casino hosting the machine.”
63-year-old American Christy Georges-Barnett was a little luckier. She invested just $25 on a slot machine at the famous Caesars Palace in Las Vegas and was able to win more than a million dollars.
