The Montreal City Police Service (SPVM) arrested two individuals on Tuesday morning suspected of stealing postal packages in Plateau-Mont-Royal.
The two individuals, a woman and a man aged 29 and 32, were arrested in possession of numerous items that they allegedly stole from a residential building on rue Saint-Grégoire. It was a person residing in the area who quickly called 911 to report the two alleged thieves exhibiting suspicious behavior.
Both tried to flee into an alley before patrollers from neighborhood station 38 intercepted them.
They appeared the next day at the Montreal courthouse for theft and receiving stolen property under $5,000. The duo were then released on conditions until the next stage of legal proceedings.
According to the SPVM, the two people could be responsible for a series of break-ins all occurring in the same area. He therefore invites anyone who has information likely to advance the investigation to call 911 in case.
Certain goods which were still in their packaging with the postal label at the time of the arrest were able to be returned to their owner.
In order to help the population ensure safe delivery of their packages, the SPVM is putting forward four tips to prevent theft.
He advises first of all to opt for deliveries with signature. As a result, no package will be left for long hours in front of the door.
If you must be absent, the SPVM recommends asking the delivery person to place the package in a safe or bin with a padlock or asking a trusted person to pick it up or have it delivered to their home.
Finally, the SPVM recommends the installation of a surveillance camera in good condition.
