(Toronto) Toronto’s famous Phoenix Concert Theater will close its doors after more than 33 years.
Owners of the downtown venue, which has hosted Bob Dylan, the Rolling Stones and Billie Eilish, among others, say the final show will be Jan. 15, 2025, as plans are underway for a residential construction project on this ground.
The owners plan to announce a busy “farewell schedule” in the coming months, featuring performances from many of the artists who have rocked the venue over the years.
It’s the latest in a string of small Toronto music venues that have been replaced by condos, including the Hoxton and the Silver Dollar Room.
Lisa Zbitnew, co-owner of the Phoenix, hopes to see the venue rise from the ashes in a new location downtown, while keeping the name.
She says a number of “promising possibilities” that could accommodate up to a thousand people are being studied, although it is too early to make an announcement.
