Holidaymakers are used to queues. But the “embarrassing scenes” that take place in the evening hours at Alicante airport make “drastic measures” necessary.
According to the British newspaper “The Sun”, passengers who land in Alicante, Spain, this summer can expect “nightmare” queues. According to the report, the reason for this is the airport’s apparently inadequate transport connections. Holidaymakers regularly have to wait many hours for transport to the city center, and there are problems especially in the evenings and at night.
According to the Sun, there are long queues, especially after 10.30 p.m. Up to 100 people are desperately waiting for a taxi. Hoteliers are urgently demanding a solution to the problem, which has been known for years. The situation is damaging the city’s image as a travel destination and is “a nightmare that repeats itself year after year,” a representative of the Hotel and Tourism Association of the Valencia Region (Hosbec) told the newspaper.
According to the Sun, the local government has promised to look into providing bus services to address the problem of stranded passengers at Alicante-Elche airport. Even the Spanish Ministry of Transport has become involved in the matter and, according to information from the Sun, wants to work with local authorities and taxi companies on a solution. The latter, however, deny any blame and point to the simultaneous arrival of several aircraft.
Anyone who has ever been to a poorly organized airport can imagine the scene: awkward silence, broken only by whining children and arguments over the few seats in expensive taxis – a very bad start to a summer vacation. It was a similar situation at Palma de Mallorca airport when a storm flooded parts of the terminal and all flights had to be canceled.
The situation was not only annoying for holidaymakers on site, but also had drastic consequences for the passengers of the cruise ship “Mein Schiff 2”. The industry magazine “Kreuzfahrt Aktuelles” reported that a good 1,000 guests were unable to board as planned due to the storm. The ship remained in the port of Palma for an extra day and therefore had to cancel a stop in Palermo planned for that day.
