Alexa Stakely, a 29-year-old speech therapist and single mother from Ohio, tragically lost her life while trying to protect her sleeping 6-year-old son from carjackers. The heartbreaking incident occurred when she was picking up her son from his babysitter’s condo late at night. After securing him in his car seat, she went back inside to grab some of his belongings. Upon returning, she found a stranger in the driver’s seat of her 2022 Honda SUV.
In a desperate attempt to stop the thief, Alexa bravely jumped onto the hood of her car. However, the criminal accelerated, causing her to be thrown from the vehicle and sustain a fatal head injury. Despite the efforts of law enforcement to locate the perpetrators, they managed to evade capture by fleeing on foot and escaping over a nearby fence into an apartment complex. Fortunately, the child was found unharmed in the abandoned car.
Alexa was not only a dedicated mother but also a hardworking professional who had earned a master’s degree from Ohio State University. In addition to her role as a speech-language therapist at a local elementary school, she worked as a waitress to support her son financially. Her tragic death has left a void in the lives of those she touched through her work and kindness.

According to Kids and Car Safety, there have been 56 reported cases in 2024 alone of children being left alone in cars that were subsequently stolen. Amber Rollins, the director of Kids and Car Safety, emphasizes the importance of never leaving children or pets alone in a vehicle, regardless of the circumstances. She advises parents to always lock their doors when exiting the vehicle, even for short periods, such as when refueling at a gas station. Businesses that provide drive-thru or curbside services offer an added layer of security, as parents can remain in their vehicles while receiving their orders.
