A woman named Julia gave The Guardian a glimpse into her life with her sports-mad husband Chris. She spends four months of the year as a single mother while Chris trains for his marathons. His dedication is often praised, while Julia stands in the background and “does everything.” This includes caring for Chris after his physical breakdown following a 100-mile run.

He started when the children were two and five years old. “He runs five to six hours a week after working all day. And also on weekends when I need his help,” says Julia. “I’m basically a single parent for four months while he trains.”

She has to do all the driving to school and even bring him dinner in bed when he can’t walk downstairs for days because of muscle pain. “And when he doesn’t drink anything from New Year’s Day until the London Marathon in April, it’s just exhausting.”
