A couple from Queens have found a new hobby during Corona. They have become magnet fishermen. The “poor man’s treasure hunt” has made them rich with their latest find.

A couple from Queens found $100,000 (around €92,000) in a New York park, reports the New York Post. James Kane and Barbie Agostini are so-called magnet fishermen. They lower magnets into lakes and rivers in the hope of fishing out valuable objects.

This hope was fulfilled in their last attempt. The couple pulled an old safe out of a pond in a park in New York. Inside was $100,000 in cash. When James Kane made the discovery, he couldn’t believe what he had found. He told Spectrum News NY1: “I said to Barbie, ‘Honey, that’s impossible!'” In the safe, the New Yorker found two large stacks of hundred-dollar bills. The bills were no longer in good condition, but were still worth their money.

The couple informed the police to avoid legal problems. Several police officers came to investigate the unusual report. They confirmed that they had never seen anything like it before. Since the owner of the safe, which was probably stolen, could not be identified, Kane and Agostini were allowed to keep their find, reports the New York Post.

The couple discovered magnet fishing as a hobby during the pandemic. “We call it poor man’s treasure hunting,” James Kane tells Spectrum News NY1. Because for their hobby, the couple needs nothing more than a magnet. Among other treasures, their finds so far have included a World War II grenade that they pulled ashore in Brooklyn. The couple has also fished out some weapons – some dating back to the 19th century – and an entire motorcycle from waters in New York.
