President-elect Donald Trump secured victory in the 2024 election, thanks in part to strong support from key voting blocs, including Hispanics and Latinos. Trump managed to increase his support among Hispanics by six points compared to the 2020 election, making Democrats only single-digit favorites among this group. One of the significant wins for Trump was flipping Miami-Dade County in Florida, a large Latino community, where he outperformed President Joe Biden by about 2%.
Republican Rep. Carlos Gimenez from Miami highlighted that Hispanics value faith, family, hard work, and the pursuit of the American dream, which align with the values of the Republican Party. He noted that many Hispanics are wary of the Democratic Party’s shift towards socialism, a system that led many of them to flee their home countries. Gimenez, the only Cuban-born congressman, believes that Republicans will continue to gain support among Hispanics if current trends persist.
In the Northeast, Trump also overperformed in areas traditionally unfriendly to the GOP. Bronx County in New York, a heavily Hispanic borough, saw a 10% increase in Trump’s support compared to 2020. Trump’s gains were not limited to the Bronx; he made significant strides in all five boroughs of New York City. Additionally, Trump’s influence helped Republican challengers in tough swing-district contests in Pennsylvania, with two Democratic incumbents conceding their races to GOP candidates.
The typically voting-hesitant Amish community in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, also showed increased support for Trump, with reports of unprecedented voter turnout. Rep. Lloyd Smucker, who was born into the Old Order Amish sect, observed a shift towards the Republican Party among the hard-working Amish population.
Asian-Americans emerged as another group with a significant trend towards Trump in the 2024 election cycle. Counties with sizable Asian-American populations in California, such as Los Angeles and Orange counties, witnessed a shift towards Trump, with a 12-point gain compared to 2020. While Trump’s support increased in most states and territories, he saw a decline in backing from white college-aged women and senior citizens.
Despite Trump’s success in various regions, Democrats also experienced gains in certain areas, including Jackson County, Missouri, Cambria County, Pennsylvania, and suburban counties around major cities like Atlanta and Seattle. Notably, all three U.S. territories in the South Pacific will have GOP representation in Congress for the first time ever.
Overall, the 2024 election highlighted shifting dynamics in voter preferences and the evolving political landscape across different demographic groups and regions. The results underscore the importance of understanding and engaging with diverse communities to secure electoral success.
