Utah State University made a decision to terminate football coach Blake Anderson due to what they described as significant violations of his contract. The university cited actions by Anderson in the spring of 2023 that went against his employment agreement and university policy. An external review found that he did not comply with Title IX policies regarding the reporting of sexual misconduct cases.
In addition to Anderson, the university also dismissed Jerry Bovee, associate vice president and deputy athletic director of external affairs, and Austin Albrecht, the director of player development and community, for alleged violations related to reporting sexual and domestic violence cases and failing to meet professional responsibilities.
After informing Anderson of their plans to terminate his contract, the university waited for his response as required by Utah law. Anderson’s response did not acknowledge his responsibilities as a USU employee and head coach, according to the university. Instead, Anderson attempted to make excuses and reinterpret the university’s policies.
Anderson, in a statement following his termination, suggested that the university’s actions were intended to avoid paying his buyout, as he was under contract through 2027. He compared his situation to that of former University of Kansas football coach David Beaty, who won a $2.5 million settlement after being fired for cause.
Nate Dreiling, who previously served as Utah State’s defensive coordinator and defensive ends coach under Anderson, has been named interim head coach. The university expressed a commitment to building a successful athletics program based on student success and integrity.
The Utah State Aggies are set to open the 2024 season on August 31 against Robert Morris. This decision to terminate Anderson has undoubtedly had a significant impact, but the university believes it was necessary based on the circumstances.
