Two years after the tragic school shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, one of the police officers involved in the delayed response is facing criminal charges. Adrian Gonzales, who was one of the first officers on the scene, is set to enter a plea in court for failing to confront the gunman before backup arrived. On the other hand, Pete Arredondo, the former school district police chief, waived his right to attend the hearing and pleaded not guilty in court filings.
The grand jury indicted both officers, along with over 370 others who were part of the police response that day, on charges of abandoning and endangering a child. This marks the first criminal charges to arise from the shooting and its aftermath, which took place on May 24, 2022. During the incident, a teenage gunman entered two classrooms at the school with an AR-15-style rifle, causing terror among the fourth-grade students and teachers. Mr. Arredondo defended his actions by stating that he no longer saw the gunman as an active shooter but as a barricaded subject. He claimed that his focus was on safely evacuating adjacent classrooms until a team with appropriate firepower could apprehend the gunman’s location.
