The production of “The Ballad of Johnny and June” opens tonight at the La Jolla Playhouse and will run through July 7. The musical features a book by Robert Cary and Des McAnuff, music and lyrics by Johnny Cash, June Carter Cash, and others. Directed by Des McAnuff, the cast includes Christopher Ryan Grant as “Johnny Cash,” Van Hughes as “John Carter Cash,” and Patti Murin as “June Carter Cash,” along with a talented ensemble.

Country music legends Johnny Cash and June Carter Cash’s love story is brought to life on stage through the eyes of their son, John Carter Cash. The musical covers their childhoods, their meeting at the Grand Ole Opry, the iconic on-stage proposal in 1968, and the highs and lows of their lives.
