Volkswagen has completed the design work on its affordable $27,000 entry-level ID.2 electric car. The company is gearing up to unveil the new EV by the end of the year, ensuring that it surpasses the concept version. The ID.2all concept, revealed in March, is positioned below the ID.3 in Volkswagen’s lineup as it aims to capture the low-cost EV market.

The ID.2all concept, based on a modified MEB platform used in the ID series, offers a range of up to 279 miles (450km). CEO Thomas Shafer expressed his excitement for the new EV, stating that it signifies the direction the brand is headed in. The design of the ID.2all draws inspiration from iconic VW models like the Golf and Beetle, infused with a modern touch for the electric age.

With a price tag expected to be under $27,000 (€25,000), Volkswagen is looking to meet the increasing demand for affordable electric vehicles. By bringing back former Bentley and Audi designer Andreas Mindt, the company aims to revamp its next-generation EVs.

Mindt, after completing the design work on the ID.2all, mentioned that the production version surpasses the concept and aligns with the company’s brand values. The EV will have a unique design, differentiating it from the hatch with a more assertive stance. The interior of the entry-level EV will feature a new design language with elements that pay homage to the brand’s history.

A standout feature of the ID.2all is the various drive modes, including Classic and Vintage modes that evoke nostalgia from the Beetle and Golf eras. Despite being shorter than the Polo, the ID.2all offers a spacious interior and a longer wheelbase for enhanced comfort.

Volkswagen plans to showcase the production version of the ID.2all by the end of the year, with sales commencing in 2025. Additionally, a GTI model is in the works, set for release in 2026, drawing inspiration from the ID. GTI concept revealed previously.

The ID.2all will be part of Volkswagen’s lineup of ten new EVs to be launched by 2027, joining models like the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.6, ID.7, and ID.Buzz. An even more affordable ID.1 is also in the pipeline, expected to start at around 20,000 euros ($21,700).

As Volkswagen finalizes the design of the ID.2all, other automakers like Volvo and Kia have already introduced affordable EV models to the market. Volvo’s EX30 has been a popular choice in Europe, while Kia’s EV3 and upcoming EV4 are set to make waves in the electric vehicle segment. With various automakers planning to launch affordable EVs, the competition in the market is heating up. Will the Volkswagen ID.2 find its place among the competition?
