VW ID.2: Series Production to Begin Earlier

The electric car market is evolving rapidly, with Stellantis and Renault already offering models in this segment. The Volkswagen Group is also gearing up to join the competition. Originally scheduled for a 2025 debut, the series production of the VW ID.2 has been accelerated. The electric small car will be unveiled this year, with sales expected to commence in 2025, according to reports from Autocar.

Interior Space

The final design of the VW ID.2 has been finalized and is likely to resemble the concept showcased last year. The dimensions are also expected to be similar, with the ID.2 and its anticipated Skoda and Seat derivatives measuring 4.05 meters in length, comparable to the VW Polo. However, with a wheelbase of 2.6 meters, longer than the Polo, the ID.2 promises ample interior space. VW claims a trunk volume of 490 liters, a significant figure in this segment. For comparison, the larger VW ID.3 offers only 380 liters, while the VW Polo provides 350 liters.

Dual Batteries

The VW ID.2 is set to come with two battery options. The base model is likely to feature lithium iron phosphate cells with an energy capacity of just under 40 kWh. The higher-end variant will utilize a battery mix of nickel, manganese, and cobalt, offering around 55 kWh. With WLTP conditions, the ID.2 is expected to achieve a range of 450 km.

Environmental Impact

Volkswagen plans to price the base model of the ID.2 at around 25,000 euros. The Skoda and Seat/Cupra versions, expected to launch within the next 18 months, are likely to be priced slightly below the ID.2. Competitors in this segment include the Renault R5 and the Citroën ë-C3, with further electric models from the Stellantis group anticipated. Peugeot, Fiat, DS, and Opel are expected to introduce their own offerings in response.

In conclusion, the Volkswagen ID.2 is set to make a significant impact in the small electric car market, offering a spacious interior, dual battery options, and environmentally friendly features at an accessible price point. With its early series production launch, the ID.2 is poised to be a strong competitor in the evolving electric vehicle landscape.
