A scoop of ice cream is becoming increasingly expensive in Germany. A nationwide comparison shows that ice cream lovers have to reckon with at least 1.50 euros per scoop. However, a cult ice cream parlor in Bochum is not playing along with the price increases.
Slowly but surely the warmer days of the year are coming back and young and old are craving something refreshing. What could be better than a delicious scoop of ice cream? This pleasure, ideal for a whole family, has become very expensive.
You have to be prepared to pay at least 1.50 euros for a scoop, as the Germany-wide ice cream scoop price comparison 2024 shows. But on closer inspection, there are still some places where prices make you feel like you’ve traveled back in time. One example of this is the ice cream parlor “Monikas Eis” in Bochum-Hamme.
Georgios Topalidis (62) and his wife Monika (45) run their ice cream parlor in the old-school style. Colorful decor, the ice cream is made in the back room of the 18 square meter shop and the prices really allow every budget to enjoy a cool and delicious refreshment on hot summer days. The two spoke to “Bild” about their own self-image.
“Our shop is in a part of town where people have several children but not a lot of money. But we want them to be able to afford an ice cream for each child,” says the 62-year-old. The ice cream shop owner also makes it clear that the prices will never rise as long as he is in charge: “I will always stay at 50 cents. I will never raise the prices, that’s a promise. I want every child to be able to afford an ice cream.”
The outstanding price has now spread beyond the borders of Bochum. “At the weekend, people from Hagen, Hamm, Essen and Wuppertal even came by and bought ice cream from us. They said they had read about us on the Internet,” reports Georgios.
The down-to-earth couple are not striving to get rich with their small ice cream business, but they don’t have any such ambitions either. “We certainly won’t get rich with our ice cream parlor. But we don’t want that either. We just want to cover our costs and get through the winter with the income,” says the Greek.
