Summer is showing its best side in Germany. But there is also a risk of heavy thunderstorms across the country on Thursday. You can read all about the current situation in the weather ticker.
7:06 p.m.: After a hot summer day with temperatures of up to 31 degrees, heavy thunderstorms are expected in Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein on Thursday evening. There is a great danger to life and limb from lightning strikes, falling trees and roofs being blown off, among other things, the German Weather Service (DWD) announced. The thunderstorms will be accompanied by heavy rain and gusts of wind of around 75 kilometers per hour. In some places, hailstorms are also expected.
According to police, there were already many operations in Hamburg on Thursday due to heavy rain. Numerous drains overflowed and branches or trees fell onto the streets. Further details were not immediately known.
A tree fell onto the S-Bahn tracks in Hamburg-Bergedorf, said a spokeswoman for Deutsche Bahn. Long-distance traffic in the direction of Berlin was also temporarily affected by a closure. This has since been lifted. The closure of the S2 is still ongoing.
According to the DWD, the wind will ease overnight into Friday and Friday morning and fog will form. Visibility of less than 150 metres is possible, particularly in East Holstein. On Friday it will be a little cooler than on previous days, with temperatures between 21 and 25 degrees.
But it is not only Hamburg that will experience severe weather. The Hersfeld-Rotenburg district also had to deal with numerous fire brigade operations. A large thunderstorm cell moved across the region on Thursday afternoon, with the towns of Bebra and Rotenburg most affected, the district said. There it was one of the strongest thunderstorms in recent years.
Meanwhile, the DWD in Offenbach in Hesse warned of further thunderstorms. There is a local risk of severe weather due to heavy rain in the eastern half of the country with up to 40 to 60 litres per square metre in a short space of time, hail around two centimetres in size and stormy gusts. The thunderstorms will ease overnight into Friday, according to meteorologists.
Specifically, warnings were issued until 7:30 p.m. of severe thunderstorms and the associated dangers – for example, lightning strikes, falling trees, flooding of streets or basements.
In the Hersfeld-Rotenburg district, the local volunteer fire brigade was called out to more than 200 operations by early evening. “In Rotenburg we currently have around 70 reported incidents, and in Bebra around 130,” explains Thorsten Bloß, head of the district administration’s hazard prevention department. The main problems were flooded basements and streets. “We will probably only be able to determine the full extent of the incident in the next few hours and days.”
According to the information, the vocational schools in Bebra will remain closed on Friday because the rooms are flooded with water. Classes will be held remotely.
