Winter Storm Warning: Illinois Snowstorm Forecast and Timeline

A major snowstorm is set to impact multiple Midwest states, including Illinois, this weekend, bringing heavy snow, ice, and potentially hazardous travel conditions. The storm is expected to hit Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and parts to the east and south, with the biggest impact in Illinois forecasted for Sunday afternoon and overnight into Monday.

According to NBC 5 Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes, current forecast models show as much as eight inches of snow near I-74, while a wintry mix of ice and snow is likely further downstate. There is a possibility that the storm could track further north, potentially affecting parts of the Chicago area with accumulating snow and travel impacts on Sunday into Monday and early next week.

Jeanes mentioned that there are conflicting models, with some keeping the system south of Chicago and others predicting up to 3 inches of snow, especially in the Kankakee River valley. He also highlighted that there will be a sharp gradient of significantly lower totals on the northern edge of the system, with ice and severe weather more likely on the southern edge.

Where Will the Most Snow Fall?

As of early Friday morning, the latest projections indicate that St. Louis may experience hazardous travel conditions associated with the storm, including snow-covered roads and freezing rain. The National Weather Service advised avoiding travel on Sunday if possible.

In Indiana, a winter storm watch is set to go into effect starting at 1 p.m. on Sunday along and south of US 24, with accumulating snow and travel impacts expected to affect the Monday morning commute. While uncertainties remain about the storm’s timing and track, heavy snow and ice are forecasted for much of the Midwest through Tuesday, potentially leading to dangerous travel conditions in some areas.

The Chicago area is likely to experience more localized lake-effect snow from Lake Michigan, with one to three inches of snow possible in certain areas. Stay tuned for further updates as the storm approaches to better understand its potential impact on Illinois and surrounding states.
