Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are currently in a tight race for the White House, according to a recent NBC News survey of registered voters. The poll, conducted from October 4-8, showed that Trump and Harris each earned 48% when respondents were asked to choose between the two candidates in a hypothetical one-on-one matchup. When third-party candidates were included, Trump had 47% support compared to Harris’ 46%.
The survey also revealed that 42% of respondents would definitely support the Republican ticket, while another 42% would definitely pick the Democratic ticket. Additionally, 4% said they would probably vote for the GOP ticket, 3% probably for the Democratic ticket, 1% leaned toward the Democratic ticket, and 1% leaned toward the Republican ticket.
Democratic pollster Jeff Horwitt, who conducted the survey with GOP pollster Bill McInturff, noted that any momentum Harris may have had earlier in the campaign has now stalled, making the race a dead heat as Election Day approaches.
The upcoming election on November 5, 2024, is crucial for both candidates. Harris must address voters’ concerns and fill in the gaps in her platform, while Trump needs to convince voters that any chaos and personal behavior from his previous term will not hinder his ability to govern effectively.
The survey also highlighted a split among voters regarding their preferred outcome for the upcoming congressional elections, with 47% favoring a Republican-controlled Congress and 47% preferring a Democrat-controlled Congress.
As the candidates head into the final stretch of the campaign, the next month will be crucial in determining whether they can meet the challenges they face and sway voters in their favor.
The survey included 1,000 interviews among registered voters with a margin of error of ±3.10%. It remains to be seen how the candidates will navigate the final weeks leading up to the election and if any significant shifts in voter preferences will occur.
