A Jewish organization has launched a new billboard campaign near San Diego State University to combat antisemitism on college campuses. The bold message on the billboard reads, “Dear colleges, American kids are afraid. Do your job!” in bright pink and white colors. The nonprofit behind the billboards, JewBelong, aims to raise awareness about the increasing incidents of antisemitism, especially following the recent Hamas terrorist attack in Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.

Archie Gottesman, the co-founder of JewBelong, emphasized the importance of starting conversations and breaking through the noise to address the rise of antisemitic attacks across the country, including in San Diego. Despite facing vandalism and harassment, such as repeated attacks on the menorah outside the Chabad House at SDSU, the community remains resilient and committed to standing strong against hate.

Rabbi Chalom Boudjnah, who has witnessed firsthand the impact of antisemitism on students, highlighted the need for resources to support those affected on college campuses. The recent act of vandalism against the menorah in March, captured on tape, served as a reminder of the ongoing challenges faced by the Jewish community. However, the incident also sparked a sense of unity and determination to rebuild and create something beautiful in the face of adversity.

As colleges and universities grapple with rising incidents of antisemitism, the efforts of organizations like JewBelong and local communities play a crucial role in raising awareness, fostering dialogue, and standing up against hate. By sharing personal experiences and advocating for support for students, individuals like Rabbi Boudjnah are working to create a safer and more inclusive environment for all members of the community, regardless of their background or beliefs.

In the face of adversity, resilience and unity emerge as powerful tools to combat hatred and discrimination. Through acts of solidarity, rebuilding efforts, and ongoing advocacy, communities can come together to confront antisemitism and create a more welcoming and compassionate society for everyone. The fight against antisemitism is ongoing, but with collective action and a commitment to standing strong, positive change can be achieved.
