A man and woman in Louisiana have been indicted on murder and kidnapping charges after being accused of killing a mother and abducting her two daughters, one of whom was also killed. The Tangipahoa Parish grand jury returned an indictment against 36-year-old Daniel Callihan, charging him with two counts of first-degree murder and single counts of aggravated kidnapping and second-degree kidnapping. The grand jury also indicted 32-year-old Victoria Cox on single counts of first-degree murder, aggravated kidnapping, second-degree kidnapping, and accessory after the fact to first-degree murder.
First-degree murder in Louisiana carries a penalty of life in prison or death. District Attorney Scott Perrilloux has not yet decided if he plans to seek capital punishment for the accused individuals. He mentioned consulting with family members and various agencies before making that decision. Perrilloux emphasized the significance of the case, stating that it is a devastating matter for the family involved.
The DA expects federal prosecutors to build a case against the duo in Mississippi, where the crimes originated. He believes that the local community deserves to see the case ultimately resolved and decided there. The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office announced the arrest of Daniel Callihan on June 13, relating to the brutal murders of Callie Brunett and her daughter, Erin.
During a press conference, Jackson Police Chief Joseph Wade mentioned an Amber Alert being issued for the trafficked children. Erin was found dead in the woods, while her sister Jalie, who was also abducted, was found injured and taken to the hospital for treatment. Authorities are still determining the manner of Erin’s death.
Callihan allegedly confessed to killing Erin and expressed a desire for the death penalty, stating he had no reason for his actions. Cox’s involvement in the crimes remains unclear. The case is ongoing, with investigations continuing to unfold. More updates are expected as the legal proceedings progress.
