Veterans Day is a special occasion to honor and show gratitude to those who have served our country. This year, the American Legion Post 29 will be hosting a community walk and ceremony in Greenwich to commemorate this important day.

The event will kick off with a community walk down Greenwich Avenue to the World War I memorial on the plaza outside the former US Post Office, now home to Restoration Hardware. Veterans and their families are encouraged to participate in the walk, which will start at 10:15 am at the corner of Greenwich Ave and Amogerone Crossway. The walk will then proceed down Greenwich Ave to the war monument at the corner of Greenwich Avenue and Arch Street.

Following the community walk, the American Legion Post 29 ceremony will begin at 11:00 am, where veterans will be honored for their sacrifice and service to our country. It is a great opportunity for the community to come together and show their support for our veterans.

In addition to the community walk and ceremony, the Rotary Club of Greenwich has launched a new tradition called “Flags for Veterans”. This event features flags sponsored by families, with all proceeds going towards American Legion Post 29 to provide essential services and support to veterans in the Greenwich area. The project was organized by Rotary Club president Agathe Likoba and veteran/Rotary member Joe Benoit.

As we commemorate Veterans Day, it is important to remember and recognize the bravery and sacrifice of our veterans. While Town Hall will be closed on Monday, November 11th, the Holly Hill Resource Recovery Facility will remain open for normal operating hours from 7:00 am to 2:30 pm. Public schools will be in session, with individual schools marking the holiday with unique programs to pay tribute to veterans.

It is heartwarming to see the community come together to honor and support our veterans. Events like the community walk, ceremony, and “Flags for Veterans” initiative serve as reminders of the importance of showing appreciation for those who have served our country. Let us all take this opportunity to express our gratitude and respect for the brave men and women who have dedicated their lives to protecting our freedom.
