A trio of armed robbers pretending to be deliverymen invaded a Colorado family’s home and attacked two children, which experts say is a disturbing new trend. The parents were not home at the time of the incident but saw the fake delivery men entering their house on a Ring doorbell camera. The men assaulted the babysitter, a 14-year-old girl, and a six-year-old boy, according to the Aurora Police Department.
Retired NYPD Sgt. Joseph Giacalone, now a professor, mentioned that criminals are always finding new ways to break into homes. In the past, they posed as utility workers, but now, with distinct uniforms and identification cards, this tactic is not as effective.
The Colorado home invasion, located near Denver, is part of a series of robberies involving fake delivery workers. The criminals wore construction vests and claimed to be dropping off a package when they forced their way into the house and robbed the family.
One suspect pushed his way in wearing a bright orange vest and carrying a box, while his accomplices waited outside. The terrifying incident was captured on a Ring camera, showing one of the men holding what appeared to be a gun. The thieves stole jewelry and cash and inappropriately touched the teen girl during the ransacking.
The homeowners called the police after being alerted by their Ring camera. The mother expressed deep fear and concern for her traumatized children, especially her son who was visibly shaken. Police departments nationwide have warned about home invasions, urging homeowners to be cautious about opening their doors to strangers.
Giacalone emphasized the importance of verifying the identity of delivery persons, suggesting that homeowners request to see their ID through a window, peephole, or door camera. He also advised checking for a UPS or Amazon truck nearby before opening the door to strangers. These simple precautions can prevent potential tragedies from occurring in your home.
