House Republicans are not worried about Vice President Kamala Harris potentially replacing President Biden in the 2024 election. They are already gearing up to criticize Harris as discussions arise about her stepping in for Biden. GOP lawmakers believe Harris is tied to the same progressive policies as Biden, which they think are unpopular with voters.
Rep. Nick Langworthy from New York and House Majority Whip Tom Emmer from Minnesota are among the Republicans dismissing Harris as a threat. Langworthy called her incompetent and stated that she will not make a difference in the election outcome. Another unnamed swing-seat Republican expressed skepticism about Harris performing better than Biden on the debate stage, labeling her as the weakest part of the ticket.
Representative Carlos Gimenez from Florida mentioned that regardless of whether it’s Biden or Harris at the top of the ticket, they will have to defend their tax-and-spend record. He highlighted that Republicans are gaining support in swing states, especially from Hispanic voters. Rep. Greg Steube, a Trump ally from Florida, emphasized that both Biden and Harris are responsible for the same policies.
Discussions about Harris potentially succeeding Biden have been ongoing, especially after Biden’s lackluster performance in the recent presidential debate against former President Trump. While Biden and his campaign have stated that he will not drop out of the race, polls indicate that he is trailing Trump. Harris has consistently shown support for Biden when asked about the possibility of her taking over.
If Harris were to become the Democratic candidate, she would inherit the substantial campaign funds from the Biden-Harris campaign. The National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) has also targeted Harris in their campaign efforts, portraying her as Biden’s “enabler-in-chief” and criticizing her role as the “border czar.”
Despite polls showing Harris performing slightly better than Biden against Trump, House Majority Whip Tom Emmer expressed confidence in the GOP’s chances in the upcoming election. He stated that voters are ready to move away from the current administration.
Efforts to reach out to the Biden campaign and Harris’ office for comments were made, but responses were not received.
