Kansas City Chiefs defensive lineman Isaiah Buggs is facing more legal trouble this offseason. Buggs, who already had two misdemeanor warrants for second-degree cruelty to dogs, was recently arrested for domestic violence/burglary and booked in Tuscaloosa County Jail. The 27-year-old turned himself in last month for the animal cruelty charges after two dogs were found severely malnourished on the back porch of a rental home he was staying at.
Buggs’ lawyer claims that his client’s arrest is part of a plan to shut down a hookah lounge Buggs owns in the city. Witnesses reported that Buggs left a gray and white pit bull and black rottweiler on the back porch of the home without food or water. The pit bull was euthanized in April, while the rottweiler is currently at the Tuscaloosa County Metro Animal Shelter.
The Chiefs have been dealing with off-field issues this offseason, including the incident involving second-year receiver Rashee Rice’s car crash in Dallas. Buggs, a sixth-round pick out of Alabama by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2019, joined the Chiefs as part of their practice squad before their Super Bowl-winning playoff run. He signed a reserve/future contract with Kansas City in February.
It’s unclear if Buggs has been released from jail, as bail was set at $5,000. Neither the Chiefs nor Buggs’ representatives have commented on the situation. This arrest adds to the list of legal troubles for Buggs this offseason, and it remains to be seen how the team will address the situation moving forward.
