So, like, apparently thousands of delivery workers at the U.S. Postal Service and UPS might be out of a job this year. Yeah, it’s a bummer. Both companies are trying to save some cash and make things more efficient because of President Trump’s tariffs and all this digital stuff happening. But, like, depending on where you live, it might affect you differently.
Word on the street is that UPS is planning to cut 20,000 jobs this year, which is like 4% of their global workforce. They’re also closing 73 distribution centers by the end of June. The big boss at UPS said they’re doing the biggest network makeover ever to make things more streamlined. They’re adding more automation to about 400 of their facilities, which could mean fewer jobs for humans. Oh, and they’re trying to reduce their work with Amazon by more than half by 2026.
The Teamsters union, which represents a bunch of UPS workers, is like, “Hold up, you can’t just cut jobs like that!” They have an agreement with UPS to create 30,000 jobs, and they’re ready to fight to protect them.
Then there’s the U.S. Postal Service, which is also slashing 10,000 positions. They’re working with Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency to cut costs. The Postal Service has been losing a ton of money, and they’re trying to modernize their operations. They have this plan called Delivering for America, which aims to make things more efficient and reliable. They’re changing how they collect and transport mail to adapt to the drop in mail volume.
UPS says all these changes won’t affect customers’ experience, but the Postal Service is making some tweaks. They’re splitting the changes into two phases, starting in April and July. First-class mail will still take between one and five days to deliver, but priority mail express might take a bit longer now. As for marketing mail (aka junk mail), magazines, and newspapers, they should arrive faster, but the Postal Service didn’t give specifics. You can check the delivery time for your package by visiting the post office or using the online tool.
So, yeah, things are changing in the delivery world. UPS and the Postal Service are trying to adapt to the times and stay afloat. It’s a tough situation for the workers, but hopefully, these changes will help the companies stay in business. Time will tell how all of this plays out.
