The Detroit Lions made a significant move to strengthen their defense by acquiring Za’Darius Smith from the Cleveland Browns. According to reports from ESPN, the Lions traded for the three-time Pro Bowl defensive end just before the NFL trade deadline.
In exchange for Za’Darius Smith, the Browns will receive a 2025 fifth-round pick and a 2026 sixth-round pick. The Lions will also get a 2026 seventh-round pick as part of the deal.
The decision to bring in Za’Darius Smith came after the Lions suffered a blow to their defensive line with Aidan Hutchinson’s injury. Hutchinson is expected to miss the remainder of the regular season and possibly most of the postseason if the Lions advance that far.
Za’Darius Smith had joined the Browns in 2023 after a successful Pro Bowl season with the Minnesota Vikings. In his first season with Cleveland, he recorded 27 tackles and 5.5 sacks in 16 out of 17 games. So far this season, Smith has 23 total tackles and five sacks through nine games.
The Detroit Lions have been performing exceptionally well this season, boasting a 7-1 record after a recent victory over the Green Bay Packers. They currently hold the best winning percentage in the NFC, with fewer losses compared to the Washington Commanders.
In terms of defensive rankings, the Lions are ranked fifth in points allowed and 22nd in yards allowed, showcasing their strength on that side of the ball.
This move not only adds depth and talent to the Lions’ defense but also solidifies their position as a top contender in the league. Fans can expect to see Za’Darius Smith making an impact on the field as the Lions push towards the playoffs.
