Malik Halfacre, a 28-year-old man from Indianapolis, was sentenced to 145 years in prison for a tragic incident that occurred in 2021. According to prosecutors, Halfacre wounded his girlfriend and fatally shot four of her family members following a dispute over money, specifically a coronavirus stimulus check.
The victims of this senseless act of violence included Eve Moore, a 7-year-old child, Dequan Moore, 23, Anthony Johnson, 35, and Tomeeka Brown, 44. Halfacre also attempted to murder his girlfriend, Jeanettrius Moore, whom he shot multiple times during the incident. Judge Jeffrey Marchal of Marion Superior Court handed down the sentence, which consisted of two consecutive 57-year prison terms for the murder charges and a 31-year prison term for the attempted murder charge.
The tragic events unfolded on the night of March 13, 2021, when the police received a report of a shooting at an Indianapolis residence. Jeanettrius Moore, the girlfriend of Halfacre, managed to escape to a neighbor’s house after being shot. She informed the authorities that there were multiple victims inside her home and that Halfacre had fled with their 6-month-old daughter.
Law enforcement officers were able to locate the infant at Halfacre’s sister’s residence. After an extensive standoff at a friend’s house, Halfacre was apprehended the following day. During questioning, Halfacre confessed that the dispute with his girlfriend stemmed from his desire to obtain a portion of her stimulus check.
Furthermore, Halfacre admitted to shooting everyone in his girlfriend’s home, stealing her purse, and fleeing in her vehicle with their daughter. He later dropped off the infant at his sister’s house. In exchange for his guilty plea, additional charges of armed robbery, auto theft, and illegal possession of a handgun were dismissed.
