A carjacker in New York City stole a minivan with a 6-month-old baby inside on Sunday. The incident took place around 11:30 a.m. at the corner of East 46th Street and 3rd Avenue in the Bronx. The minivan, a 2000 Chrysler registered in Pennsylvania, was left running when the thief entered and drove off with the baby in the back seat.
The New York City Police Department immediately sprang into action, calling for the public’s help through social media to locate the missing child. Deputy Commissioner Kaz Daughtry urged New Yorkers to be on the lookout and assist in any way possible. Thankfully, less than an hour later, the NYPD provided an update stating that the 6-month-old baby had been found safe and sound, and a suspect was taken into custody.
Although details about the suspect have not been released by the police department, law enforcement sources revealed that the 53-year-old individual has a history of prior arrests, including a charge of grand larceny auto in November. He was reportedly involved in stealing a Jeep Liberty in the Bronx at that time.
This alarming incident serves as a reminder of the importance of remaining vigilant and cautious, especially when it comes to leaving vehicles unattended, even for a short period. The quick action taken by the NYPD and the cooperation of the public played a crucial role in ensuring the safe return of the infant.
