Federal officials are on the lookout for the person responsible for shooting and killing a sea lion in California. The incident was reported by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in a press release on Oct. 9. The injured sea lion was discovered at Bolsa Chica State Beach earlier this week. The animal, just 2 years old, was still alive when officials found him. Typically, sea lions can live for 20 to 30 years.
The young male sea lion was initially located alive between lifeguard stations 22 and 23, according to the NOAA. The Pacific Marine Mammal Center in Orange County rescued the sea lion, but unfortunately, it succumbed to its injuries the next day. An examination revealed a fresh gunshot wound in its back.
Sea lions are known to be inquisitive and not aggressive towards humans. If the perpetrator is found, they will face prosecution under the Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA). This law prohibits the harassment, hunting, capturing, or killing of sea lions and other marine mammals. However, non-lethal methods are allowed to deter marine mammals from damaging private property, such as fishing gear, as long as it doesn’t harm the animals.
Authorities believe there were witnesses present at the Orange County beach during the shooting. The NOAA is offering a reward of up to $20,000 for any information that leads to the conviction or a civil penalty for the suspect.
