Rep. Jamaal Bowman, D-N.Y., recently suggested that the pro-Israel lobby is targeting him because he is an “outspoken Black man.” This accusation came during a heated debate with his primary challenger, Westchester County Executive George Latimer. The debate, the last televised faceoff before the upcoming election, is part of one of the most expensive House primary races in U.S. history.

Bowman, a progressive Democrat, took aim at the American Israeli Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) multiple times during the event, criticizing it for being a right-wing organization. AIPAC has thrown its support behind Latimer, with its campaign arm investing millions in the race. Bowman claimed that most of Latimer’s funding comes from right-wing Republicans who support Trump. He also highlighted the significant amount of money being spent in this primary, insinuating that it was due to his outspoken nature as a person of color who advocates against genocide in Gaza and fights for justice.

In response, Latimer defended himself by pointing out that AIPAC has endorsed other Black politicians, such as House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Rep. Ritchie Torres, and Rep. Gregory Meeks. He emphasized that the support he receives is based on his backing of the state of Israel, not because of campaign donations. However, Bowman argued that having a few Black friends does not absolve AIPAC and its supporters from being racist.

The debate highlighted the contrasting approaches of the two candidates, with Bowman emphasizing his collaborative and servant leadership style while accusing Latimer of being entrenched in big money politics. Latimer, on the other hand, underscored his years of experience in local New York politics, questioning who the voters trust to prioritize their interests.

A recent poll conducted by Pix11, Emerson College, and The Hill showed Latimer leading Bowman by a significant margin. If Latimer emerges victorious in the primary, he will be the first moderate Democrat to defeat a member of the left-wing “Squad.”

The intense debate between Bowman and Latimer sheds light on the intersection of race, politics, and financial influence in electoral campaigns. It underscores the challenges faced by candidates who defy conventional norms and speak out against powerful lobbying groups. As the primary election approaches, voters will have to decide which candidate best represents their interests and values, considering the complex dynamics at play in this high-stakes race.
