Several people were injured at a Pride event in Baltimore over the weekend when fireworks and mace were used in a crowded area, causing chaos and prompting the event to be shut down early. The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday when a chemical agent, mace, was released into the crowd during a confrontation between two groups. In addition to the mace, fireworks were set off, causing attendees to flee and resulting in multiple injuries as people tried to escape to safety. Fortunately, none of the injuries were life-threatening, and all those affected were treated at hospitals and later released.
The use of mace in this incident raises concerns about safety and security at Pride events, especially with Pride Month events still ongoing across the United States. Just last week, flags near the Stonewall National Monument in Lower Manhattan were removed and damaged, with flag sticks snapped and three-quarters of the flags stolen. Additionally, Pride decorations in the Chelsea neighborhood were burned, prompting City Councilman Erik Bottcher to speak out against these acts of hate. Mayor Eric Adams also expressed support for the LGBTQ+ community and vowed to bring those responsible for defacing the Stonewall monument to justice.
As New York City prepares for its massive Pride parade on June 30, law enforcement agencies such as the F.B.I. and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security have issued a joint public service announcement warning of increased security threats against Pride events both in the U.S. and abroad. The announcement highlighted the potential risk of terrorist organizations or their supporters targeting these gatherings, emphasizing the need for heightened vigilance and adherence to event organizers’ guidance.
While the threat of terrorist attacks at Pride events is not new, organizers stress the importance of staying alert and following safety protocols to ensure the well-being of all attendees. In light of recent incidents, it is crucial for participants to be aware of their surroundings, report any suspicious activities, and cooperate with security measures in place. By working together to prioritize safety and inclusivity, the LGBTQ+ community can continue to celebrate Pride with resilience and unity.
