An Italian surfer tragically lost her life in a bizarre accident while surfing off the west coast of Sumatra. According to reports from the Antara News Agency in Indonesia, 36-year-old Giulia Manfrini was surfing in the waters of Masokut Island in the Mentawai Islands when she was impaled by a swordfish.
Lahmudin Siregar, the acting head of the Mentawai Islands’ Disaster Management Agency, confirmed the incident, stating that Manfrini was surfing in the waters of Ombak Bengbeng, Masokut Island in the Southwest Siberut District when the swordfish jumped and struck her in the chest.
Two witnesses, Alexandre Ribas and Massimo Ferro, who were also foreign nationals, rushed to help Manfrini after she waved for assistance. They provided first aid before taking her to a nearby clinic, where she was unfortunately pronounced dead.
A medical examination revealed that Manfrini had suffered a stab wound in the upper chest, approximately 5 centimeters deep. The report also noted that foam was emitted from her nose, indicating a lack of oxygen, likely due to drowning.
Manfrini’s body is currently at Pei Pei Puskesmas and is expected to be transported to the city of Padang before being repatriated to Italy. The mayor of Venaria Reale, Fabio Giulivi, expressed shock and condolences over Manfrini’s untimely death, describing her dreams of surfing and opening a sports vacation travel agency.
