Former President Trump has taken a significant lead in the betting odds over Vice President Kamala Harris as Election Day approaches. This marks the first time since July that Trump has held a double-digit lead over Harris, indicating a possible surge in momentum for the former president.
The Real Clear Politics betting average showed Trump with a 10-point lead on Sunday, the largest lead he has had over Harris and the largest lead any candidate has enjoyed since July 31. This lead comes at a time when some Democrats are trying to calm nerves within their party following recent polling trends that seem to favor Trump.
David Plouffe, a senior campaign adviser for Harris and former adviser to President Barack Obama, appeared on the “Pod Save America” podcast to argue that the fundamentals of the race have not shifted significantly. He believes that the race has been close since mid-September and does not see it breaking open for either candidate.
Despite public polling showing a tight race, the betting odds have been moving in Trump’s favor. Trump had a substantial lead over President Biden back in July but lost ground after Biden’s withdrawal from the race and Harris’s rise to the Democratic ticket. Harris briefly held the lead in August but has since been surpassed by Trump, who now holds a 10-point advantage.
Trump himself has been vocal about his betting odds, claiming they are strongly in his favor. The Real Clear Politics average tracks odds from seven different platforms, all of which currently show Trump leading the race. His largest lead of 12 points is on Points Bet.
