The Museum of BBQ is set to open in Kansas City, Missouri, in the spring of 2025. Food writer Jonathan Bender and Kansas City chef Alex Pope are behind this innovative project. The museum aims to showcase the different elements and regional variations of barbecue in an immersive experience.

Visitors can expect to explore 10 interactive installations that highlight the essence of barbecue, from smoke and rub to spice and wood. The museum will also feature a gift shop where guests can purchase rubs, sauces, and other barbecue-themed products.

One of the main attractions will be two storytelling trails that guide visitors through the elements of barbecue and the diverse regional styles found across America. From the Carolinas to Memphis, Texas, and Kansas City, guests will learn about the unique flavors and cooking techniques that define each region.

The museum will also offer fun experiences like jumping into an oversized crock of “barbecue beans,” adding a playful twist to the traditional barbecue side dish. Located in the Crown Center above Burnt End BBQ, visitors can enjoy classic barbecue dishes like brisket, pulled pork, and burnt ends right downstairs.

Kansas City was chosen as the home of the Museum of BBQ due to its rich barbecue tradition and history. The city’s connection to the stockyards and railways played a significant role in shaping its barbecue culture. Furthermore, Kansas City hosts the American Royal World Series of Barbecue, the largest barbecue competition globally.

While the museum won’t open its doors until next year, visitors can already catch a glimpse of what’s to come with a miniature installation near the entrance of the Crown Center. The goal of the museum is not only to educate people about barbecue but also to inspire them to experiment and enjoy barbecue in their own kitchens.

Bender emphasized the importance of sharing the joy of barbecue with visitors, acting as a guide to help them explore and appreciate this beloved American culinary tradition. The Museum of BBQ promises to be a one-of-a-kind experience that celebrates the art of barbecue in all its smoky, flavorful glory.
