Shirley MacLaine, the 90-year-old actress, is set to release her new memoir titled “The Wall of Life: Pictures and Stories from This Marvelous Lifetime” on Oct. 22. In a recent interview with People magazine, MacLaine revealed details about her love life, including the fact that she had affairs with all of her leading men except for Jack Nicholson and Jack Lemmon.
Despite playing love interests in the 1983 film “Terms of Endearment,” MacLaine and Nicholson never had an affair in real life. MacLaine explained that Nicholson always made her laugh and that she didn’t think he would have been her type for an affair. The two had a great working relationship on set, with Nicholson winning the best supporting actor Academy Award for his performance.
MacLaine also clarified that her relationship with Jack Lemmon was strictly platonic, despite playing love interests in two romantic comedies. She described Lemmon as a “darling guy” and compared him to a sister.
In contrast, MacLaine did have an affair with Robert Mitchum, whom she co-starred with in two films. She described Mitchum as extremely intelligent but lacking a sense of humor. MacLaine also mentioned that there was no romantic connection between herself and Nicolas Cage when they worked together on “Guarding Tess” in 1994.
Throughout her career, MacLaine only had one marriage to Steve Parker, with whom she had a daughter named Sachi. Parker passed away in 2001 at the age of 79. Despite her open marriage with Parker, MacLaine chose not to engage in affairs with Nicholson and Lemmon, citing their strong friendships and professional relationships.
Overall, MacLaine’s candid revelations about her love life provide a glimpse into the complexities of relationships in Hollywood. Her upcoming memoir promises to share even more stories and insights from her remarkable lifetime in the entertainment industry.
